Smart Switching
Technology has come to the rescue of people have trouble remembering to turn lights off or dim them to minimum levels. Technology has put brains into light bulbs. A tiny disk that slips into a standard light socket is placed underneath the bulb. A tiny microprocessor inside the disk controls the light.

Smart Lights
There was a time when fluorescent tubes were considered smart lights. The lighting industry now focuses on compact fluorescents, E-lamps, controls and other exotic technologies. The lowly incandescent lamp is only a comparison to show how good the alternatives are. However, incandescents dominate the residential sector, and even energy-conscious people may forget that they have good uses. Here are two: Applications where the light stays on for only a few minutes at a time, such as closets and hallways, are appropriate. Dimming also favours incandescents. These two applications save energy only if people operate the lights properly.

Smart Uses
Some people find creative uses for these devices that have more to do with communication than energy conservation. Installed in the bathroom, the auto-off version has been used to signal teens that it's time to leave the shower. One enterprising parent put a series of these smart lamps in a bathroom light bar to help keep the teenager on schedule.
Home Automation System
The latest in electrical accessories is the home automation system, which can control the entire lighting system with pre-programming for turning on and off, change in the intensity of light depending on the time of the day or for different moods.

There is an option of setting the home lights and other devices (including air conditioning units) to be on or off at the flick of a master switch. Essential circuits (refrigerators, clocks) can be bypassed by the master switch. People who have set up homes decades ago are replacing their electrical fittings with the newer devices. In the past fittings were meant to be hidden from view, but now with the sleek and sophisticated devices, it is time to flaunt them.
